  1. Backyard Homestead: Produce All the Food You Need on Just 1/4 Acre! By: Carleen Madigan

This book is filled with so much information. I suggest reading it a few times. I would even suggest having a hi -lighter and notepad with you. This book is filled with ideas, illustrations, and enthusiasm. The garden plans are solid, the advice crisp; the diagrams, as on pruning and double digging, are models of decorum. Halfway through, she puts the pedal to the metal, and whoosh! At warp speed, we re growing our own hops and making our own beer, planting our own wheat fields, keeping chickens (ho hum), ducks, geese, and turkeys (now we re talking) and milking goats, butchering lamb, raising rabbits, and grinding sausage. Oh, and tapping our maple trees, churning butter, and making our own cheese and yogurt. Peacocks, anyone? Need I say more? Well, yes. Stock up on some knitting books because next winter, you ll want to grow your own sweaters, too."

2. 40 Projects for Building Your Backyard Homestead: A Hands-on, Step-by-Step Sustainable-Living Guide By : David Toht

This book is a great step - by step style reading. Written in a way to help simplify things. Every project not only has illustrations to help visually but also keeps budgets in mind.

When David wrote this book you can tell he understood that alot of his readers would be starting at a beginner level and keeps that in mind while outlining projects.

This is an excellent read for a better understanding of how to properly harvest, germinate and store your seeds . I recommend this as a way to better understand how to become more self sufficient. This book saved many of my seeds from being useless the nest season due to unproper care. When you understand how to properly harvest and keep your seeds fresh this can be a huge help in preventing you from having to go out and buy new seeds every season.

4. The Prepper’s Canning & Preserving Bible: 10 In 1: The Life-Saving Guide to Water Bath & Pressure Canning, Dehydrating, Pickling, Fermenting & Freeze Drying. Protect Your Family from any Crisis Now! By : Jason Gasper

This book is definitely an important one. What good is having a garden if you cant preserve anything? This book if full of knowledge, tips and trick.

Not only does it have a full breakdown and how to of how to preserve food in all sorts of ways, it also has recipes!

It can be overwhelming with the many different types of preservations types and the dangers of not doing them properly, this book helped me feel more confident prepping food for my growing family.

With its simple to follow along reading style and great visuals this book is one I keep in my kitchen for easy access.

5. Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine: 550 Herbs and Remedies for Common Ailments By: Andrew Chevallier

The is an absolutely beautiful book. This book is so easy to use and find answers to questions you may have. So easy to follow with great pictures. The Glossary and Index are very well done. I have used my book so many times I have lost count, There are so many natural alternatives to modern day medicine and so many of the ingredients can be found in your garden/ kitchen.

If you are truly wanting to be as self sufficient as you can then I would suggest this book 100%. This will help you to step away from modern day medicine.

I understand there are so many great books and resources out there, these are just a few of my favorites. These are the books I find myself going back to. I will also say that some of the books have overlapping information, but sometimes I find reading the same information in a different way can sometimes help give me a better understanding of it. Anyway I wish you all the luck and happy reading :)
